When boiling water can help
Hot water melts fat and soap. If your kitchen sink is slow because a thin layer of cooled grease and soap has coated the pipe, a flush of very hot water can soften it and carry some of it along. It works best on a partial slowdown, not on a fully blocked drain.
It does nothing useful for hair, wipes, paper, toys or roots. These do not melt, and hot water only pushes loose material further down the line to clog again later.
The risks to your pipes and fixtures
- Porcelain sinks, tubs and toilets can crack from sudden heat.
- PVC drain pipe has a temperature limit, and boiling water is above it.
- Joints and glued connections can soften and loosen.
- Water poured into a standing clog can splash back and scald.
- Garbage disposals and plastic traps can warp.
PVC drain pipe is rated by its manufacturers for non-pressure drainage up to about 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Boiling water is 212. One manufacturer states 140 degrees as the operating limit for its Schedule 40 drain pipe, and a county specification elsewhere in the country uses the same figure for a related plastic pipe. These are not California rules, but they explain why plumbers avoid pouring boiling water into plastic drains.
| Cause of slow drain | Does boiling water help? | Better first step |
|---|---|---|
| Light grease film in a kitchen drain | Sometimes, with hot tap water instead | Hot tap water plus dish soap |
| Hair in a tub or shower | No | Hair snare or small cable |
| Wipes or paper in a toilet | No, and it may crack porcelain | Plunger or closet auger |
| Roots in a sewer line | No | Cable or jetter, then repair |
| Fully blocked line | No, risk of splashback | Stop and call |
Better home options
- Use hot tap water, not boiling, with a squirt of dish soap and let it work for a few minutes.
- Use a plunger on sinks and tubs, with the overflow covered for a good seal.
- Use a drain snare for hair in a tub or shower.
- Use a small hand auger for a bathroom sink, taking care not to scratch the fixture.
- Stop and call if more than one fixture is affected or water backs up.
If you try something and the drain still does not clear, stop trying new tricks. Mixing chemicals, boiling water and force is a recipe for a bad day. A plumber with a cable or a camera solves it faster and with less risk.
Port Hueneme note: grease and what the city asks
The City of Port Hueneme runs a state-required Fats, Oils and Grease program. It tells residents never to pour grease, oil or fat down a drain, because it can harden in the pipe and, together with roots, cause sewer backups and overflows. The city advises collecting used cooking oil in a sealed container and putting it in the trash. For larger amounts it lists the Water Resource Inspector at 805-986-6661.
The municipal code also sets a temperature limit of 140 degrees for discharges to the city sewer. That rule is aimed at permitted and commercial users, and we do not read it as a household restriction. We mention it because it shows the same figure that pipe makers use. If you are unsure how a rule applies to your address, ask the Wastewater Division at 805-986-6561.
Drain still slow after you tried everything?
Call and tell us what you tried. We clear the drain and tell you why it clogged.
When to stop and call a plumber
If water backs up in more than one fixture, the line is blocked past them and boiling water cannot reach the problem. If the same drain clogs every few weeks, the cause is in the pipe. A camera shows whether it is grease, roots or a damaged section. See drain cleaning for how we clear a single fixture, and sewer line cleaning for a whole line.
For stubborn grease, hydro jetting washes the pipe wall clean in a way hot water cannot. For repeated clogs with no clear cause, a camera inspection shows what is happening inside.
Where we work
Better first steps than a kettle
Start with a plunger sized for the fixture. A cup plunger suits a sink and a flange plunger suits a toilet, and a good seal does more than any amount of hot water.
If grease is the problem, boiling water only moves it farther down the line, where it cools and sets again. That is how a kitchen clog becomes a clog in the shared line.
A hand drain snake reaches most sink clogs. If you pass the snake and the drain still backs up, the blockage is likely farther along and needs a machine, so stop before you damage the pipe.
We clear drains across Port Hueneme and in Oxnard and Channel Islands Beach. Tell the dispatcher which fixtures are affected and whether you used any chemicals. That helps the plumber bring the right tools and protective gear.
Questions Port Hueneme homeowners ask
We advise against it. PVC drain pipe is rated by manufacturers for non-pressure use up to about 140 degrees Fahrenheit, and boiling water is 212.
It melts fat for a short time, but the grease can solidify again further down the pipe. Hot tap water and dish soap is a gentler first step.
The city says never to pour grease, oil or fat down a sink. Collect small amounts in a sealed container and put it in the trash, and call 805-986-6661 about larger amounts.
Yes. Sudden heat can crack porcelain, especially in an older or thin bowl.
