Repiping replaces the water supply lines in your home. It is a big job, and it makes sense when leaks keep appearing in different places, when the water runs brown or when pressure drops because pipes have narrowed inside. This page explains how we decide, what the process looks like and what affects the price.
If a pipe is failing right now, close the main and call our burst pipe repair line first. A repipe can be planned once the water is off the floor.
Signs your pipes are at the end of their life
- More than one pinhole or seam leak in a short period.
- Brown or rust-colored water when you turn on a tap after sitting.
- Weak pressure at several fixtures, not just one.
- Green or white crust on copper or flaking galvanized fittings.
- Known polybutylene or galvanized pipe in the house.
- A home inspection that recommends replacement.
Why older homes here get a second look
City housing records put about 65 percent of Port Hueneme homes as built before 1980. Many of those houses used galvanized steel or early copper, and some that were remodeled in the 1970s through 1990s may have polybutylene or CPVC. We do not claim any particular home has a certain pipe. We find out by looking at the lines at the meter, water heater and under sinks.
The city reports tap water with a pH of about 7.5, hardness about 210 parts per million and disinfection with chloramines. We have not found a city statement saying whether that water is corrosive to copper, so we do not make one. What we do see is that pipes of any age fail faster with scale, high pressure and poor connections.
Copper or PEX
| Question | Copper | PEX |
|---|---|---|
| Longevity | Long track record | Newer, widely used and approved in California |
| Installation | Soldered joints, more labor | Flexible tubing, fewer joints, faster |
| Wall damage | More access holes | Often less opening, can snake through walls |
| Cost | Usually higher | Usually lower |
| Considerations | Hardness and water chemistry affect long-term wear | Sunlight exposure and rodent damage need care |
The California Building Standards Commission approved PEX for potable water statewide in 2010. Both materials are accepted, so the choice is about cost, access and your preference. We explain both in plain words and give prices for each so the comparison is clear.
How a repipe works
- We inspect the existing piping and test pressure to map what is failing.
- We give you a written price and a plan for where we will open walls.
- We shut off water at an agreed time, run the new lines and connect every fixture.
- We test under pressure, restore water and show you the new shutoff valves.
- Wall patches are left ready for drywall repair, which is usually a separate trade.
What affects the price of repiping
A repipe is priced by the house, not by the foot. These factors set the number.
Size of the house
More bathrooms and fixtures mean more pipe and connections.
Material chosen
Copper and PEX have different material and labor costs.
Wall and ceiling access
Single-story slab homes and two-story homes need different routes.
Permit and inspection
Repiping typically needs a city permit, so call Building and Safety at 805-986-6512.
Finish repair
Drywall, paint and flooring are usually a separate cost.
Insurance rarely pays for replacing aging pipes. It may cover sudden damage from a failure. Ask your agent.
You get a clear price before work starts. Call (805) 249-7135 to schedule an assessment and written price.
Licensing and permits
The Contractors State License Board says unlicensed contractors may not do work on projects needing a building permit or costing $1,000 or more in labor and materials. Its C-36 plumbing classification covers water supply piping from the owner side of the meter to the structure. Ask any plumber for their license and check it with the state before signing. Contractors working in Port Hueneme also need a city business license.
What to do before a repipe starts
- Locate and test your main shutoff so the crew can isolate the house at once.
- Clear the access points such as under sinks, the water heater closet and the garage wall.
- Move valuables and furniture away from walls where drywall may be opened.
- Plan for water to be off for part of at least one day and fill a few containers beforehand.
Planning a repipe?
Call and tell us the age of the house and what the pipes are doing. We schedule an assessment and give you a written price.
Alternatives to repiping
Not every failing pipe means a full repipe. A single failure can be repaired, and a line under a slab can sometimes be rerouted, as described on our slab leak repair page. If you are unsure whether repiping is justified, a leak detection visit tells you how many leaks you have and where.
We repipe homes in Port Hueneme, Oxnard and Channel Islands Beach. Condo and townhome repiping often involves association rules and shared walls, so tell us up front if you live in one.
Questions about Repiping in Port Hueneme
Repeated leaks in different spots, brown water, weak pressure at many fixtures and known problem materials are the usual reasons. We inspect the lines and give you an honest recommendation.
Many single-family repipes take a few days, depending on the size of the house and access. We give a schedule with the written price.
Yes. The California Building Standards Commission adopted regulations allowing PEX for potable water statewide in 2010.
Some opening is needed, but PEX can often be routed through existing cavities with fewer holes. We explain where we open walls and what we leave ready for patching.
Repiping usually needs a permit. Call the City of Port Hueneme Building and Safety Division at 805-986-6512 to confirm for your address.
