Hard water is the story behind a lot of plumbing wear, from white crust on faucets to a water heater that rumbles. Port Hueneme's water is hard, and the city says so in its yearly report. This page explains what the numbers mean and how softening and filtration fit.
You do not need to buy a system to benefit. A test, a flush of your water heater and clean aerators go a long way. If a system makes sense, we install it and service it.
What the city reports about your water
The City of Port Hueneme Water Division supplies tap water from the Port Hueneme Water Agency plant, which blends reverse-osmosis and nanofiltration treated local groundwater with imported Calleguas water. The 2025 water quality report lists total hardness at 210 parts per million, or milligrams per liter. Dividing by 17.1 gives about 12 grains per gallon. The report lists sodium at 58 ppm and total dissolved solids at about 490 ppm. The city disinfects with chloramines, at about 2.5 ppm.
Those figures describe water at the treatment plant. Water at your tap can differ with the plumbing between. If you want your own number, test your tap and ask the Water Division at 805-986-6563 for the latest report.
What hard water does in a home
| Where you see it | What happens | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Faucets and showerheads | White crust and reduced flow | Clean or replace aerators and heads |
| Water heater | Sediment, noise and lower efficiency | Flush regularly, see water heater repair |
| Tankless heater | Scale on the heat exchanger and error codes | Descale on a schedule, see tankless service |
| Glass and tile | Spots and film | Wipe dry, use a softener if it bothers you |
| Laundry and skin | Stiffer fabrics and dry feel for some people | A softener changes this |
Softener, filter or neither
A water softener swaps hardness minerals for sodium or potassium and removes scale at the source. A filter, such as a carbon cartridge, targets taste, odor or sediment but does not soften. Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap treats drinking water only. These tools do different jobs, so we start with what bothers you rather than with a product.
- If scale bothers you everywhere, a whole-house softener addresses it.
- If chlorine or chloramine taste bothers you, a carbon filter helps and a softener does not.
- If you only want better drinking water, an under-sink filter or reverse osmosis unit may be enough.
- If you have a tankless heater, softening protects the heat exchanger.
- If you are on a low-sodium diet, ask a doctor before choosing a salt-based softener.
What affects the price of a softener or filter
We quote by the job. These factors set the number.
System type and size
Household size and hardness decide the capacity.
Installation location
A garage with a drain and an outlet is simple. A tight utility room is not.
Plumbing changes
Bypass valves, new shutoffs and a drain connection add parts and labor.
Salt or potassium and upkeep
Running costs include salt or potassium and occasional service.
Valve or control repair
Replacing a worn valve costs less than a new system.
Insurance does not pay for water treatment equipment. If scale has damaged an appliance, that is typically a warranty or maintenance issue.

Installation and service
We install softeners and filters with a bypass, shutoff valves and a proper drain connection. We also service existing units, including resin tanks, control valves and brine tanks. Mention your brand when you call so the right parts are ready. If your system uses a drain connection, it should be installed to the code that applies to your address, and we explain how.
We cover Port Hueneme, Oxnard and Channel Islands Beach. Hardness differs by source, so ask us about your address if you are outside city water service. If scale is shortening the life of your pipes, see repiping for replacement options.
Questions about Water Softener and Filtration in Port Hueneme
The city 2025 water quality report lists total hardness at 210 parts per million in the blended water, which is about 12 grains per gallon by our conversion.
Not always. If scale bothers you on fixtures, glass or appliances, a softener helps. If it does not, regular water heater flushing and cleaning aerators may be enough.
No. A softener removes hardness. A carbon filter targets chlorine and chloramine taste and odor.
Salt-based softeners add a small amount of sodium. If you are on a restricted-sodium diet, ask a doctor, or consider a potassium option or a separate drinking-water filter.
Yes. We service control valves, resin tanks and brine tanks, and replace worn valves.
